This Kazak rug has been hand-knotted in Afghanistan using hand spun wool and natural vegetable dyes. The design of Kazak rugs originally came from the Azerbaijan and Caucasus mountain area of the Middle East. Designs of Kazak rugs are almost always geometric in pattern, and some, such as this piece, feature a central medallion motif. Although Kazak pieces are no longer weaved in the Caucasus area, the traditional designs have seen a resurgence in popularity over the last decades, with the majority of pieces now being produced in Kabul. Blue is used as the background colour of this piece with red, cream, green and orange being used to detail the bold geometric motifs. Cream and red are used to colour the border presenting a nice contrast to the interior field.
