This Afghan rug has a cotton foundation and a wool pile. It has a respectable 165 knots per square inch.
Khal Mohamadi rugs, such as this one, are instantly recognizable due to the dark red and navy colouring, and bold geometric and floral motifs. quite unquely, the name of this style of Oriental rug does not come from the town in which the piece was weaved, or even the area from which the designs originated. The rugs are named after the man who created the designs. Most Khal Mohamadi rugs are nowadays weaved in the town of Kunduz in north east Afghanistan.
This rug has a rich red background which is contrasted by the dark navy blue and brown used for the pattern.
