This Kazak rug has been hand-knotted in Afghanistan using hand spun wool and natural vegetable dyes. The design of Kazak rugs originally came from the Azerbaijan and Caucasus mountain area of the Middle East. Designs of Kazak rugs are almost always geometric in pattern, however some also feature a central medallion motif. Although Kazak pieces are no longer weaved in the Caucasus area, the traditional designs have seen a resurgence in popularity over the last decades, with the majority of pieces now being produced in Kabul. Blue is used as the background colour of this piece with red, cream, green and yellow being used to detail the bold geometric motifs. This piece is also quite unique as it does not feature a border.
