Tabriz holds one of the finest reputations for rug weaving in the world. It has many different styles of rugs making it sometimes hard to pinpoint certain pieces actual origin to the untrained eye. The Tabriz Mahi is given a distinction because it is nearly always a very fine weave, mixed with wool and silk most commonly and again more often than not uses a highly stylised fish pattern. Most people without it being pointed out do not recognise this as it is rather abstract but once shown it becomes clear. Mahi is therefore translated as fish into English from Farsi.
